Difference Between Framed and Frameless Cabinets

By Cabinets Direct USA  on  January 8, 2020

Thinking about refreshing your kitchen cabinets? When mapping out your budget and design ideas, there are two cabinetry construction categories to consider: framed and frameless. Framed cabinets have long been the most popular style, but frameless cabinets have recently become an equally popular style. Both categories offer their own design possibilities and advantages. If you were ever wondering what the actual differences were between framed and frameless cabinets, we’ve got you covered. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of both construction styles to consider when redesigning your kitchen cabinets.

What is Framed Cabinetry?

Framed cabinets are the standard cabinetry found in most American homes. They offer a traditional look, which is perfect if you’re designing a classic kitchen. Framed cabinets are constructed with a “face-frame” installed at the front of the box, to which the cabinet door is then attached. The face frame (also known as the cabinet’s ‘picture frame’) adds an extra dimension and strength to the cabinet, ensuring that the door won’t break off after repeated use. Framed cabinets do not offer as much space as frameless cabinets because of the face frame at the front. However, they are sturdier than frameless cabinets and are easier to install. Since they are the traditional cabinets found throughout the U.S., there are many design possibilities available.

What are Frameless Cabinets?

Frameless cabinets are also known as “European cabinets” because they are commonly seen in homes across Europe. In recent years frameless cabinets have gained popularity in the United States due to their modern look. Frameless cabinets differ from framed cabinets in that they do not have a face frame – instead, the doors are attached directly to the cabinet. This gives frameless cabinets a sleek aesthetic look that can work in many different design themes, from retro to avant-garde. The main advantage of frameless cabinets is that because they don’t have a face frame, they offer more storage space. This makes shelving inside the cabinets easier to install as well. However, because there isn’t a face frame, the cabinet is less sturdy and may not last as long as framed cabinets. Additionally, frameless cabinets are harder to install because of their boxy construction, and thus are more expensive.
